Critters of the Lembeh Strait | Episode 06/2014

In Episode 6 we feature sped-up footage of critters to give you insight into just how busy and industrious citizens of the underwater world really are. A tiny partner-shrimp, Sisyphus-like, pushes endless boulders to improve the burrow it shares with a goby, a snake eel does a graceful dance in the sand, and a sea-star, normally slothful to the human eye, positively races across the sea floor. Critters of the Lembeh Strait | Episode 05 / 2014

In the newest episode of fresh critters from Lembeh you can see lots of different octopuses, some very rare nudibranchs and one of Lembeh’s most bizarre stars, the hairy frogfish. There’s also some incredible footage of a hatching flamboyant cuttlefish, you will feel like you’re right there. Lean back and enjoy!

Critters of the Lembeh Strait – Episode 04 / 2014

We were lucky enough to witness a female flamboyant cuttlefish laying eggs under a coconut shell, and then on the same dive also saw babies hatching from their eggs, possibly laid by the same female at an earlier date, giving us a rare glimpse into the reproductive cycle of this mesmerizing animal. Keep an eye out as well for some seldom-seen, bizarre and beautiful nudibranchs in various shapes and forms and an elegant porcelain crab with eggs.

Critters of the Lembeh Strait – Episode 03 / 2014

Many of your favourite stars of the muck-diving world are in this latest video such as flamboyant cuttlefish, outrageous nudibranchs and hairy frogfish on the hunt, but keep an eye out as well for the amazing crustaceans featured here; the decorator crabs in particular seem to have a contest going for who can win the ‘best camouflage’ pageant and the ultimate winning prize is survival. Critters of the Lembeh Strait – The Pygmy Squid hunting & feeding

Here is a new video of a pygmy squid hunting and feeding on a squat lobster. The pygmy squid gets up to 15mm, this individual was about 10mm long. Watch how the squid “drinks” the squat lobster like a juice box and if you look carefully, you can even see how the liquid moves into the squid’s body. Enjoy this rare glimpse into the amazing macro world of Lembeh.

Are you curious to know what you can see on Lembeh Resort’s house reef? This video by our Photo Pro Sascha Janson starts off with beautiful aerial footage and then showcases wide-angle views of hard corals, thriving artificial reef structures, and resident damsel fishes. Of course Lembeh is famous for macro life and the house reef is full of tiny treasures, from Hairy Octopus, Bobtail Squid and the Lembeh Sea Dragon to rare, jewel-like nudibranchs and the quirky Twin-Spot Goby. Critters of the Lembeh Strait – Episode 01 / 2014

At the moment the Lembeh Strait is “hotter” than ever and our guides have been finding loads of weird critters in the past few weeks. Watch for a little crab aerating its eggs, a ghost pipefish hunting and a coconut octopus rejecting a shell. Want to see more? – Come and dive with critters@lembeh.

Critters of the Lembeh Strait – The Hairy Shrimp

In addition to the Hairy Frogfish, Lembeh also boasts the Hairy Shrimp as part of its assortment of hairy residents. Hairy shrimp (also called Algae shrimp) also count as one of the tiniest critters in the Strait (like really really tiny! Really). They often move about resembling floating bits of algae in either brown, green, or yellow.
Here’s a small collection of the “hairy shrimp” (Phycocaris simulans). You will also be able to see that many of the individuals in this video have eggs. Also keep an eye out for one scene with two of them in one frame… enjoy!
